Alliances are challenging because they require cross-functional (Internal), cross-organizational (External) management. More so than perhaps any other organizational endeavor, Alliances require the resources and commitment of the entire organization. In order for an organization to Partner effectively, the entire organization must be on the same page. Alignment then begins internally across the multiple departments involved. It is equally important to have alignment with your external stakeholders to ensure that resources and commitments follow the objectives of the Partnership. Both organizations alignment with regard to the Alliances Strategy, (Success Objectives, Value Creation, Roles & Responsibilities and the Partner Engagement Process) must be implemented.

The image to the left is a sample of one organizations internal alignment around the area of Value Creation.

The image to the right shows the alignment of an external organization's sales, marketing, finance and operations departments to the partnership's description of strategy, value creation, roles & responsibilities and Partner engagement process.
